The cheapest sensible way to get earthworks done in Casey, and when cheap costs you twice
The cheapest sensible package on a standard Casey block is $2,400 to $3,800: one day of a 3 tonne excavator and operator, two tipper loads of spoil out, and you doing the clearing yourself. The mid tier, which is what most people should actually buy, is $4,800 to $9,500 and adds full spoil removal, a 150mm compacted sub-base and documented levels. Below about $2,000 for anything involving a truck, something has been left out, and it is nearly always the spoil.
Budget, mid and premium on a typical Casey residential job
Prices are 2026, GST inclusive, for a single residential block in Berwick, Cranbourne, Narre Warren, Hampton Park or Endeavour Hills. The job assumed is a house pad or large shed pad of roughly 100 to 150 square metres with a modest fall, plus the driveway sub-base. A pool dig, a sloping block or rock will move all three columns up.

Where you can safely save money
Every one of these is a real saving that costs you nothing in quality. We suggest them to customers ourselves.
- Do the clearing yourself. Cut back the shrubs, pull up the pavers, take the clothesline out, unbolt the fence panel and move the pot plants. That is two to four hours of machine and operator time at $150 to $200 an hour, so $300 to $800 saved on a small job.
- Book one full day, not two half days. A half day of a mini excavator and operator is $480 to $600 and a full day is $680 to $980, because the float on and float off costs the same either way. Two separate visits means paying the float twice, which is $180 to $350 wasted.
- Stage the work in the right order. Do the site cut and the service trenches now, and the driveway after the build is finished. Pouring a driveway before the concrete truck, the brickie and the roof trucks have been over it is how people pay for the same driveway twice.
- Keep clean spoil on site if you have room. Every truck load you do not send to a receiving site saves $280 to $480. Twenty cubic metres of dug clay is a mound about 6 metres across and 1.5 metres high, so be honest about whether you want that.
- Choose recycled crushed concrete over quarry rock. A graded recycled Class 3 does the same structural job for $20 to $30 a tonne less. On a 25 tonne driveway that is $500 to $750. The detail is on our crushed rock and fill guide.
- Combine mobilisations. If you want a pool dig and a stormwater trench and a shed pad, do them in one visit. Each separate mobilisation carries its own float, setup and minimum charge, typically $400 to $900.
- Pick your window. February through to April is the dry, workable stretch in Casey and the machine is not fighting mud, which means fewer hours. Mid week is also easier to book than a Saturday. See the best time of year for earthworks.
- Design to standard sizes. A 3 tonne excavator fits through a 1.5 metre opening and a 1.7 tonne mini goes through 900mm. If your design forces a 5 tonne machine down a side that needs the fence removed and rebuilt, that is $400 to $900 in fencing plus slower work.

Where saving money is a false economy
These are the ones we get called back to fix, usually two to five years later, and the fix always costs more than the original saving.
- Leaving spoil disposal out of the scope. Saving $1,200 on cart away and then paying a separate contractor to come back for a pile that has been rained on and spread out costs $1,800 to $3,000. Wet clay is heavier and takes more loads.
- Skipping the sub-base under a slab or driveway. Saving $1,400 in rock and compaction on a Hampton Park driveway buys you a cracked and dished slab in five years. Breaking out and replacing that driveway is $9,000 to $16,000.
- Dry hire with no operator. A day of dry hire looks like $380 to $550 against $880 for a wet hire day. Then add the float, the fuel, your own insurance exposure, and the fact that an inexperienced operator takes two to three times as long and can put a bucket through a water main. - Not lodging Before You Dig plans. The service is free. A gas or fibre strike is not. Casey has gas mains at around 600mm and NBN conduit shallower than people expect, and the asset owner will invoice you for the repair. See what happens after a service strike.
- Hiring an uninsured operator. A cash job with no public liability certificate is fine right up until the machine clips the neighbour’s retaining wall or the stormwater main. Ask for the certificate of currency. It takes thirty seconds and every legitimate operator has one.
- Importing fill from a mate’s site. Free fill is only free if it is clean, classified and compactable. Contaminated or organic fill will fail the slab compaction inspection and has to come back out, and disposing of unclassified soil in Victoria is an EPA problem, not just a cost problem.
- Skipping the survey set out on a sloping block. Saving $680 to $1,400 on a surveyor and cutting to the wrong datum is the most expensive mistake on this page, because the fix is to redo the cut and often to re-engineer the retaining.
What a suspiciously low quote has left out
If one quote is 30 to 40 percent under the others, do not assume the others are gouging. Ask for these five line items in writing and the gap usually explains itself.
- Spoil cart away and the tip levy. The single biggest omission. Ask how many cubic metres are leaving, at what rate, and who holds the dockets.
- Rock and hammer time. Add $220 to $380 an hour on top of the machine rate. If the quote says nothing about rock, the risk is yours.
- Imported material. Backfill, bedding sand and crushed rock are separate from machine hours. A pad quote with no tonnage in it is a dig quote, not a pad quote.
- Reinstatement. Nature strip, crossover, lawn, fence panel. In Victoria you are responsible for mud tracked onto the road and for damage to council assets outside your boundary.
- Permits and asset protection. The City of Casey requires an asset protection permit for building work involving heavy vehicles, and a separate vehicle crossing permit for a new crossover. Fees are set in the council’s annual schedule, so check the current figure rather than trusting a number in a quote from last year. Our Casey excavation permits page walks through which applies.
Victorian rules and schemes that change the maths
There is no rebate for putting a hole in the ground. Four state level settings do move the number, though, and it is worth knowing them before you sign anything.
First, the Victorian landfill levy increases each 1 July. That is why spoil disposal gets a little more expensive every year and why a quote from eighteen months ago will not hold. Second, Before You Dig Australia plans are free, and lodging them is not optional. Third, domestic building insurance is required for domestic building work where the contract price is over $16,000, which affects how a registered builder prices a package that includes your earthworks. Fourth, if you are running the build yourself, an owner builder Certificate of Consent from the Victorian Building Authority is required for owner managed domestic building work over $16,000, and that consent process is where a lot of self managed budgets discover extra costs.
One more that genuinely saves money: Victoria’s resource recovery framework means graded recycled crushed concrete is a legitimate, widely available sub-base product here, not a compromise. That is a real $500 to $900 saving on a typical driveway with no loss of performance.
When the cheapest option is to spend nothing
We would rather tell you this on the phone than after we have invoiced you. If your back corner goes soggy after heavy rain and dries out within two days, that is not a drainage job, that is a low spot and a bag of soil. If your driveway is cracked only along the control joints, that is concrete doing what concrete does and the base underneath is fine. If your lawn has a dip you can fix with four cubic metres of screened soil and a rake, do not put an excavator on it.
